Map of every Bay Wheels station in San Francisco
Every installed Bay Wheels station, drawn from the same feed the Cyclemate app reads for its live counts. Pick a city, tap a station for its name and how many docks it has, and send yourself directions to it.
San Francisco
San Francisco has 392 Bay Wheels stations with 8,990 docks between them.
How Bay Wheels directions work, dock to dock
Choose the Bay Wheels option in the planner and the whole trip is one set of directions: the walk to a bike, the ride, and the walk from the dock. You unlock and pay in the Bay Wheels app, as usual.
A dock with bikes near you
The route starts with a short walk to the nearest Bay Wheels station that has a bike waiting, with the live count on the pin so you are not walking to an empty dock.
The SuperSafe™ route
Protected bike lanes and quiet streets first, busy roads crossed at signals, turn by turn with audio, and every choice explained when you ask why.
A dock with space near your destination
The ride ends at a Bay Wheels station with free docks close to where you are going, so you are never circling for somewhere to return the bike.
Walk the last block
The final step is the walk from the dock to the door, timed and on the map, so the arrival time is the time you actually arrive.
Where are the Bay Wheels stations?
San Francisco has the most, with 392 stations and 8,990 docks, followed by Oakland (103), San Jose (82), Berkeley (48) and Emeryville (15).
| City | Stations | Docks | Docks per station |
|---|---|---|---|
| San Francisco | 392 | 23 | |
| Oakland | 103 | 21 | |
| San Jose | 82 | 21 | |
| Berkeley | 48 | 20 | |
| Emeryville | 15 | 20 |
San Francisco holds more stations than the other four cities together. Oakland, Berkeley and Emeryville make up the East Bay network, and San Jose is a separate cluster around downtown and the Diridon station; a ride has to start and end in the same system, but Bay Wheels is one system, so a dock in any of the five cities will do.
E-bikes at the dock and off it
Bay Wheels runs pedal bikes and e-bikes from the same stations, and lets an e-bike be locked to a rack away from one. The map shows both.
Bay Wheels e-bikes
Docked e-bikes · Live at every stationThe planner's Bay Wheels e-bike option starts at the nearest station with an e-bike waiting and is timed at e-bike speed, which matters on the hills.
Bay Wheels e-bikes off the dock
Locked away from a station · 780+ on the streetBay Wheels e-bikes can be locked to a rack away from a station, and the ones parked that way show live on the Cyclemate map: 780+ of them in San Francisco at the moment we pulled the figures.
Your own bike
Not renting? The directions are just as good.
A bike of your own gets the whole app: the SuperSafe™ route, a rack to lock up at and a workout saved when you arrive.

Bay Wheels in San Francisco, answered
Can Cyclemate give directions for Bay Wheels?
Yes. Cyclemate routes a Bay Wheels ride dock to dock: a station with bikes available near you, the SuperSafe route along bike lanes and quiet streets, and a station with free docks near your destination, with a short walk at each end. The directions are free; you pay Bay Wheels for the ride in its own app.
How many Bay Wheels stations are there?
Bay Wheels had 640 installed stations with 14,105 docks on October 6, 2026: 392 in San Francisco, 103 in Oakland, 48 in Berkeley, 15 in Emeryville and 82 in San Jose. Cyclemate shows all of them on one map.
How many Bay Wheels stations are in San Francisco itself?
392 stations with 8,990 docks, more than the East Bay and San Jose combined. On top of the stations, more than 780 Bay Wheels e-bikes were locked away from a station in San Francisco at the same moment, and those show live on the Cyclemate map too.
Does Cyclemate show how many bikes are at a Bay Wheels station?
Yes. The counts come from the live Bay Wheels feed, refreshed every few minutes, so the planner shows the bikes and e-bikes waiting at the station you start from and the free docks at the one you end at, and the map shows the same counts for every station.
Can I plan a Bay Wheels e-bike route?
Yes. Alongside the Bay Wheels option, the planner shows a Bay Wheels e-bike option that starts at the nearest station with an e-bike available and is timed at e-bike speed, which matters on San Francisco hills.
Is the route different on a Bay Wheels bike?
The streets are the same. Every route is a SuperSafe route, chosen for protected bike lanes, Slow Streets and quiet streets over busy arterials. What changes on a Bay Wheels bike is where the ride starts and ends: at a dock with a bike, and at a dock with space.
Where can I park my own bike in San Francisco?
At any of the more than 5,900 public rack sites on the Cyclemate map, from sidewalk racks to the secure cages in city garages. Choose Navigate to parking in the planner and the directions end at a rack near your destination.
Is Cyclemate free for Bay Wheels directions?
Yes. Directions, turn-by-turn navigation and the live station map are free for Bay Wheels and for your own bike, on iPhone, Android and the web.
Notes and sources
The stations come from Bay Wheels' public GBFS feed, the same feed the Cyclemate app reads every few minutes for the live bike and dock counts on its map and in its directions. We pulled the station list on October 2026 and kept the stations the feed marks installed. The cities are the feed's own regions; the few stations the feed leaves unassigned are placed by where they stand. The dock counts are the feed's published station capacity, summed.
The e-bikes locked away from a station are counted from the feed's free-bike list at the same moment, inside San Francisco, and rounded down. That is a snapshot of a fleet that moves all day, which is why the page quotes it as a floor and the app shows the live positions.
For the streets between the stations, see the San Francisco safety map, and for the other US systems, Citi Bike in New York City and Metro Bike in Los Angeles.
Spotted a station that has moved? Tell us and we will check the feed.
