How Metro Bike directions work, dock to dock

Choose the Metro Bike option in the planner and the whole trip is one set of directions: the walk to a bike, the ride, and the walk from the dock. You unlock and pay in the Metro Bike app, as usual.

  1. A dock with bikes near you

The route starts with a short walk to the nearest Metro Bike station that has a bike waiting, with the live count on the pin so you are not walking to an empty dock.

  2. The SuperSafe™ route

Protected bike lanes and quiet streets first, busy roads crossed at signals, turn by turn with audio, and every choice explained when you ask why.

  3. A dock with space near your destination

The ride ends at a Metro Bike station with free docks close to where you are going, so you are never circling for somewhere to return the bike.

  4. Walk the last block

The final step is the walk from the dock to the door, timed and on the map, so the arrival time is the time you actually arrive.

Metro publishes no dock capacity, so the docks column is the bikes available plus the free docks each station reported at the moment of the pull, which undercounts a station with a bike out of service. Two thirds of the stations are in the zone that runs from Downtown through Koreatown and Central LA to North Hollywood; the Westside zone covers Culver City, Venice and Playa.

Metro Bike in Los Angeles, answered

Can Cyclemate give directions for Metro Bike Share?

Yes. Cyclemate routes a Metro Bike ride dock to dock: a station with bikes available near you, the SuperSafe route along bike lanes and quiet streets, and a station with free docks near your destination, with a short walk at each end. The directions are free; you pay Metro Bike Share for the ride in its own app.

How many Metro Bike Share stations are there in Los Angeles?

Metro Bike Share had 223 installed stations on October 6, 2026: 148 in the zone that runs from Downtown through Central LA to North Hollywood, 65 on the Westside, and 10 in Hollywood. Metro publishes no dock capacity, so Cyclemate counts about 3,200 docks from the bikes and free docks reported at that moment.

Which part of Los Angeles has the most Metro Bike stations?

Downtown and Central LA, by a long way: 148 of the 223 stations, in the zone Metro runs from Downtown through Koreatown and Central LA up to North Hollywood. The Westside zone, around Culver City, Venice and Playa, has 65, and Hollywood has 10.

Does Cyclemate show how many bikes are at a Metro Bike station?

Yes. The counts come from the live Metro Bike Share feed, refreshed every few minutes, so the planner shows the bikes waiting at the station you start from and the free docks at the one you end at, and the map shows the same counts for every station.

Are there shared e-bikes in Santa Monica?

Yes. Veo runs dockless e-bikes in Santa Monica, and more than 790 of them were on the street on October 6, 2026. Cyclemate shows them live on the map so you can see the nearest one before you walk to it.

Is the route different on a Metro Bike?

The streets are the same. Every route is a SuperSafe route, chosen for protected bike lanes and quiet streets over busy boulevards. What changes on a Metro Bike is where the ride starts and ends: at a dock with a bike, and at a dock with space.

Can I use Cyclemate on my own bike in Los Angeles?

Yes. Your own bike gets the same SuperSafe route as a Metro Bike, with turn-by-turn directions and audio, and every ride is saved to Apple Health on iPhone. Only the start and the end differ: a Metro Bike ride begins at a dock with a bike and finishes at a dock with space.

Is Cyclemate free for Metro Bike directions?

Yes. Directions, turn-by-turn navigation and the live station map are free for Metro Bike and for your own bike, on iPhone, Android and the web.

Notes and sources

The stations come from Metro Bike Share's public GBFS feed, the same feed the Cyclemate app reads every few minutes for the live bike and dock counts on its map and in its directions. We pulled the station list on October 2026 and kept the stations the feed marks installed. The zones are the feed's own regions, which Metro names City of LA, Westside and Hollywood; the one station the feed leaves unassigned is placed by where it stands.

Metro's feed carries no station capacity, so every dock figure on this page is the station's bikes available plus free docks at the moment of the pull, rounded down in the headline. The Veo count is the feed's free-bike list for Santa Monica at the same moment, rounded down: a snapshot of a fleet that moves all day, which is why the app shows the live positions.

For the streets between the stations, see the Los Angeles safety map, and for the other US systems, Citi Bike in New York City and Bay Wheels in San Francisco.

Spotted a station that has moved? Tell us and we will check the feed.
