London cycle parking map: every rack, stand and hangar in the city

At any of the 23,758 public cycle parking locations Transport for London has surveyed: Sheffield stands on pavements and outside stations, hoops on walls and posts, two-tier racks at cycle hubs, and lockable hangars on residential streets. Together they hold 145,930 bikes. The Cyclemate map shows every one, and its directions can end at the nearest rack to wherever you are going.

145,930 spaces at 23,758 locations across all 33 boroughs, according to Transport for London’s cycle parking survey. Half of those locations hold four bikes or fewer, and only 881 hold twenty or more. On top of the public racks there are more than 3,400 marked bays for shared e-bikes.

Hackney, with 2,292 locations holding 12,322 bikes, then Westminster (10,703 spaces), Southwark (9,945), Camden (9,023) and Lambeth (8,590). The fewest spaces are in Bexley (1,180), Redbridge (1,281) and Sutton (1,540). Hackney also has by far the most cycle hangars, 299 of London’s 931.

A cycle hangar is a lockable shelter on the street, about half the size of a car parking space, that holds six bikes. Residents rent a space from their borough council for an annual fee and get a key or fob; most boroughs have a waiting list, so apply on the council website before you need it. There are 931 hangars on the London map, and Hackney, Lambeth, Waltham Forest and Southwark have the most.

Yes. The map holds 455 locations with cycle lockers or a secure compound, 5,373 spaces between them, plus 931 residential hangars. Secure compounds and cycle hubs at stations need registration or a fob, and lockers and hangars are rented. For a short stop, a Sheffield stand in a busy, well-lit spot with a good D-lock is what most London riders use.

Usually, but not always. Locking to street furniture is not an offence in itself, but councils, Transport for London, Network Rail and private landowners can remove bikes locked to their railings, and signs at stations and outside some buildings say so. A marked stand is always the safer choice, and the map shows the nearest one.

Street stands, hoops and most station racks are free. Hangars and lockers charge an annual rent set by the council or the operator, and some station cycle hubs ask you to register first. Shared e-bikes park free in a marked bay, and the operator app can charge a fee for parking badly.

Open the Cyclemate map and tap the P button. Racks and stands show as blue P markers and shared e-bike bays as green ones; tap the button again for Lime bays only, again for Forest bays, and tapping a marker tells you the kind of stand, how many bikes it holds and whether it is covered. Turn on Navigate to parking in the planner and the directions end at a rack near your destination, then walk you to the door.

In a marked e-bike bay in the 15 boroughs that require one (Camden, Hackney, Islington, Lambeth, Westminster and Kensington and Chelsea among them), and on the pavement in the 7 boroughs that allow free-floating parking, as long as the bike is upright and out of the way. The public racks come from Transport for London’s survey of every borough, carried out between 2017 and 2019, so stands installed since then may be missing and a few surveyed ones will have gone. The shared e-bike bays are refreshed from borough council feeds every night. If a rack on the map is not there any more, or one near you is missing, tell us and we will fix it.
